San Francisco is once again leading the way in sustainability and innovation with the launch of a citywide public water access program. The Hetch₂O water program is a nod to the pristine mountain water source, which originates from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The city has installed 200 public water fountains, providing free access to high-quality drinking water for all residents and visitors.

But this program is not just about access to basic drinking water. The city has partnered with a renowned industrial designer to create reusable water bottles and glasses, specifically designed to showcase the clarity and purity of Hetch2O water. These bottles and glasses can be refilled at the mini Hetch2O water temples located throughout the city.

Inspired by the historic Pulgas Water Temple, which was built in the 1930s to celebrate the completion of the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct, the new Hetch2O water temples are mini art installations in their own right. Each one is designed to be a gathering place for the community, with benches and seating areas surrounding the fountain. The water fountains themselves are designed to mirror the Pulgas Water Temple’s classical architecture, creating a beautiful and calming environment for people to enjoy.

The Hetch2O water temples also offer a unique feature not commonly found in public drinking fountains: sparkling water on the go. This refreshing option is perfect for those who want a little extra fizz in their water or to add to their favorite beverage.

The program is already receiving rave reviews from residents and visitors alike. “I love being able to refill my Hetch2O bottle throughout the day,” said local resident Lisa Wong. “The water tastes amazing, and it’s so convenient to have these water fountains all over the city.”

Small business owners are also seeing the benefits of the program, as it encourages people to stay hydrated while supporting local businesses. “Having the Hetch2O water temples in our neighborhood has been a huge boost for our business,” said Jake Martin, owner of a nearby cafe. “People come in all the time to refill their bottles and grab a quick drink, and it’s become a great gathering spot for the community.”

The Hetch2O water program is just one more step San Francisco is taking to promote sustainability and health. By providing easy access to high-quality drinking water, the city is making it easier for everyone to stay hydrated, reduce plastic waste, and enjoy the beauty of Hetch Hetchy’s mountain water.
